Overview
I tailor my work to the needs of the instrument and player which is difficult to assess over the phone or even with pictures. In every case I will recommend bringing the instrument in to accurately assess the work needed to keep the instrument in the best state of repair.
I offer my best work along with a 5-year warranty on services unless specified otherwise.
My approach to repairs

Whether it's basic maintenance or a bigger restoration job, I prefer to go over the instrument with the musician in person. Then, if I spot any concerns, I can point them out and come up with the best plan of action. If a speedy turn around is necessary, I may point out a slight bridge warping or perhaps wear to the edge of the instrument that can be addressed at a later date.

Violin & Viola Restoration

After 20 to 50 years of playing, violas and violins usually need more in-depth restoration to keep them playing. Changes in humidity in combination with the constant tension of the strings, stress the wood and glue joints. Fortunately, the violin's genius construction allows luthiers to reset neck, reinforce crack, and retouch chips and wear in the varnish. Each instrument tells a story in the years of wear from constant playing.
I am passionate about keeping hundred year old instruments playing for the next generation.

Cello Restoration

The climate here in DC is particularly hard on cellos. The rapid changes in humidity particularly in winter stressed the wood a lot. Often this stress loosens glue joints. If the glue joints can't release the tension, cracks can form in the top or back of the instrument.
Much like violins and violas, cellos will need more in-depth restoration work every 20 to 40 years to clean them up and preserve them.
I've worked on many cellos over the past years from smaller restoration jobs going up to much bigger projects like top removal and scroll grafts. Much of this work is tailored specifically to the instrument in question so I recommend scheduling a repair assessment appointment if you are looking to have work done on your cello.
Tonal Optimization

Once an instrument has been created by a maker and has been played for several years the wood shifts and changes causing the tone of the instrument to change. Some instruments are more temperamental than others and humidity affects their tone more. Particularly, on better instruments small adjustments to the setup (Pegs, top nut, bridge, soundpost, tailpiece, saddle, end button, chin rest,) can have an impact on the instrument’s performance.
I've spent my career learning adjustment techniques. Sitting in while other luthiers as they adjust instruments with clients. I have also spent time talking to colleagues about ways to maximize an instrument’s playing potential.
Every luthier has this slightly different ear and slightly different priorities when it comes to adjustment. I focus on listening to the instrument and working with the musician to solve the issue they are having. I aim to get the instrument back to sounding the way the musician fell in love with it.
